His Wicked Games The Cunningham Family Book 1 eBook Ember Casey Reviews
The book was hard to get into and I struggled to finish it. It had its moments and there was plenty of gratuitous sex.
The beginning of the story where Lily couldn't get anyone to answer the call bell from the front gate of Calder's estate didn't surprise me, considering he was mourning and didn't want to see anyone. It got a little extreme when Lily decided to "climb the fence" as it were to speak with him about the money his father had promised to her father's art gallery. It just seemed a little stalkerish.
Calder is an arrogant billionaire playboy. What else is there to say. Oh and he cut off the funds his father promised to Lily's father for their art center.
You don't know a lot about Lily's father except he runs the center and it's been his baby. All you know about Calder's father is he's rich, donated to everyone, and had died.
Lily's exboyfriend, newspaper reporter Garrett, makes an appearance after Lily calls him for help in getting people to donate to the center. He has anger management issues and thinks he's all that and then some.
The book has potential with a little finessing.
This is a great book. It shows the author certainly did her research, of you know what I mean. *laughter*. Realistic and kind of a fantasy.
The girl needs money for her father's most cherished thing. She will not give up even when she believes it is almost over. She needs the money and is not willing to give up. Even when she has to ...
Well that is for you to find out. Enjoy the book I know I did.🍻
I read the reviews and what some people viewed as negatives I saw as positives realistic and a developed protagonist. Yes, there are some terrible traits about both characters but seeing these flaws made it engaging realistic. The hard language (pun fully intended) reads more like a porn movie than a romantic occurrence but that was actually a relief as in some romances can become hilarious in their flowery depictions of sex. This one was extremely realistic. some people hated the main character but her contradictory nature and cursing, to me, showed her low class roots (contrasting the man's manners) and her excessive emotional baggage. I think the people who disliked her wanted that cardboard cutout--insert youself--protagonist; instead we get a very interesting, raw character that we watch rather than imagine ourselves as. I find that more entertaining and it gives the story more depth. I'm only giving the book three stars though due to it was very predictable. In fact, I was expecting a second twist in the ending. Also, even though the "vulgar" vocabulary was interesting, it tended to be very repetitive. The vocabulary in the novel needed to be broadened (but not to the point of awkward euphemisms), in that word choices were so repetitive I felt myself speed reading to get through whatever scene it was. Overall, it was a decent read with a well developed protagonist, but the vocab and plot were a bit wanting.
The book flowed but I skipped a lot. found Lilly to be definitely a stalker type character. First her father gave up everything and now is a wreck due to the stress and strain of running the Center. The games were cute but Lilly's lack of honesty with herself was a little annoying. She flip flopped from ok I will wear these clothes to then not willing to wear the clothes. For god's sake your covered in mud and they weren't cleaned ....who would put them back on after a day or so????? No one .....this just emphasized that the author had a good idea but went off the track sometimes. Also I knew he was broke by the time she wrestled with him in the mud and then went inside the McMansion. Her insistence on the fact that someone owed her somthing to keep her dream together was just so selfish... she didn't seem smart enough to be the person who was running the center with her dad....and her level of poverty was also a bit much.
She hates him at the start, but he's a gorgeous billionaire. So you know where this is going before you're finished with the first chapter. The author has a nice writing style and keeps the story moving. Her descriptions of the games Lily and Caulder play, always with a sexual overtone involved, are perhaps the best parts of the book in that they have a definite "heat" about them. But Lily's rationale for engaging in these kinds of shenanigans--that is, her willingness to prostitute herself to raise money for her art center--makes her a less than admirable protagonist. Can I really root for such a character? Do I really care if she gets what she wants? And, of course, it doesn't take long before we all KNOW what she really wants, whether she's willing to admit it or not. Still, it's not a bad example of the genre. If you think it's romantic for a woman to have sex with a guy just because he's phenomenally wealthy, then you'll probably be satisfied with this book.
I feel like this story had potential and could've been much better. Lily was not very likeable. I wanted to punch her in the face half the time. She was selfish and stupid. Just because you say you want to have a spine over and over throughout most of the story doesn't make it so when your actions are the complete opposite. Also the love story was like eeehh... I understand lust between them but love not so much. There's also things that could've been left out such as Garrett and the whole backstory that includes him since it didn't give anything to the story. There's many other little things but I won't go over them.
It was fun at times and the sex scenes were very good. I truly liked Calder but the fact that I couldn't like Lily more turned me off the whole series.
So she hates him because he's super rich and thinks her junkie art center is entitled to his money. If that is not a misplaced since of entitlement and anger I don't know what it's. So irritated I can't even get past the first few chapters. No wonder it was free.
Despite the length this is not a complete story. There is no pay off at the end. Do not be fooled.
