Sahara Sanders' book presents a wide range of surprising and unusual recipes drawn from the eastern European tradition. These are not restaurant foods either, but homestyle recipes. (I say this because I have not seen these foods on restaurant menus during my visits to Eastern Europe, although that could perhaps be because I went to different countries than Sahara draws upon.) The recipes are not laid out in a traditional cookbook style, with a list of ingredients each on a separate line, but instead are written in conversational paragraphs. Except for some salads, the food is overall very heavy; this is not a book of diet recipes, but that doesn't bother me at all, since cooking a new recipe is a special-occasion thing for me anyway.

Sahara clearly excels at food styling, for she supplies a very large number of brightly colored images of the recipes arranged decoratively. I've rarely seen a cookbook with so many color photos of the same dishes in completely different presentations. This is sure to be a hit for those who eat with their eyes.

I am only partway through the book but have already seen a number of recipes I would like to try at home. Some ingredients will take effort to get hold of, but most of the recipes can be well-supplied simply from the grocery store.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. It is obvious that the author went to a great deal of work making and photographing many variations of the recipes. Anyone looking for some creative and fun ways to serve food might enjoy the pictures. I have to admit, however, that I did not find more than a few recipes that I would be interested in trying. Instead of the usual recipe book, with easy to follow instructions, this cookbook is written as though your grandmother is telling you how to make foods. I suppose this can be comforting for some, but I found it annoying. One example "If pickled cabbage is very sour, rinse it with clean water and squeeze it slightly, to get rid of the liquid. If it's not too sour, then just squeeze it slightly, to get rid of the liquid anyway." If you need a recipe for boiled potatoes or liver cake, you may like this book. Otherwise, skip it.

The recipes were not unusual. If you've read some Eastern European/Russian cookbooks, you'll have seen these before. I don't mind the conversational/paragraph style of recipe myself, but I know some people do not like it.

The book is very heavy on pictures of decorated food. Some of them are very attractive - some of them are not. I read this book on the Paperwhite, but the pictures may be a little better in color. I also felt like the large number of people made the book a little slow to turn pages, but that might just be me.

The author is British/European, but all equivalent measurements are provided. Overall, I thought it was worth the read.
Love this recipe book! There are lots of really different recipes for every meal and occasion. I especially like the section on appetizers with all fun and interesting ways to serve them. Great for my work parties and potlucks!
Some of the ugliest foods I have ever seen in a cookbook.

As for the recipes, some are okay. Not really for serving up dinner guests. I couldn't get past the food photography. Get it just for the entertaining awfulness of that. You wont be prepared for the number of times you find yourself saying "Wow, that is just horrible."
These recipes recall many of the dishes my daughter tasted and learned about while living in Russia. Great pictures.
This is a beautiful book. The food presentations are amazing; almost too beautiful to eat! I love experimenting with the cuisine of other cultures! There are a few recipes I would like to try.

UPDATE Have tried the borsht and stuffed cabbage rolls recipes and turned out delicious. Looking forward to trying the many more.
