Wow. Once again, Reynard has not disappointed in the next installment of the Florentine series. As a huge fan of the Gabriel series, I had put high hopes into this new one, especially since it’s a paranormal, something I typically don’t always go for. But, this series changed my mind when The Raven came out. And now, continuing with William and Raven’s story, I think it further solidifies my belief that Sylvain Reynard can do no wrong.

There was a lot going on in this book, which there had to be because so much was left hanging in the balance at the end of Raven. But, Reynard takes you through each conflict with ease, making it easy to follow and understand what’s going on in William’s world. And William is distraught, trying to find his balance between protecting his city and people while trying to protect Raven, his love. Tensions were high throughout the book as William fought for the balance he seeks.

You revisit the Underworld more in this book, giving the reader some insight into how long vampires have been around and the hierarchy and lust for power drives them. Whatever you thought you knew about the Underworld and its inhabitants, you may discover that you were wrong. I know I was. Allegiances and lines will be drawn and tested as everyone prepares for the fate of the city and the undead creatures who dwell there.

And, of course, we still get glimpses of my favorite characters, Gabriel and Julianne Emerson. I love that they’re included in this storyline because I’m one of those fans who want more from them.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but I will say that there’s a few scenes toward the end that will make you sit up straight and bite your nails as pieces of the puzzle start to unfold. It definitely leaves you wanting more.

Heart pounding, breathtaking, suspenseful, and romantic…that’s how I would describe this book. If you haven’t tried The Raven yet because you’re afraid or unsure of paranormal, I highly suggest you try it because you will want to read The Shadow. I will be waiting (impatiently) for the next book in the Florentine series because I have so many questions after how the book ends that I need to know. Right. Now!

The Shadow, brings so much more to this great series! Along with a beautiful continuation of the love story of Prince William and his Cassita, Raven, ahhh, we get conflicts that lay a great foreboding in the principality, building up to The Roman. Thank you, Sylvain Reynard!

To quote Raven describing William in chapter eight, this book is both beautiful and terrible! There is so much beauty in Sylvain Reynard's writing. He gives so many meaningful scenes, with hope and longing being strong. SR's writing is captivating in the terrible, shadowed underworld that kept me on edge and wholly involved in the middle of the action with characters I could not escape! (yes, there were parts where I cringed and it was fantastic) I loved the hand to hand combat with Aiobhe!

It has been so great to be reading vampires again. Who can resist a handsome creature who creates gusts of wind at sudden appearances, scales walls, is fierce in actions and lovemaking, and is a cloaked Prince ruling over his Consilium in Florence, Italy, and defending it from the Curia?

Sylvain Reynard has such a way of creating great compassion for his heroes. We can glimpse at and feel their weakness but still see their strength at the same time. William's utter devotion to Raven and the way it undoes him is beautiful. I loved the Prince leaning on his wounded lark! (which has irony because she is physically crippled)

- "I'm too weak to send you away. The night I found you, I saw a vision of what the world would be like without you. That was before I knew and loved you. Now that I do— it would be impossible.”

- Without warning, he pressed their mouths together. When they came apart, he whispered in her ear, “I’d forgotten.” “You’d forgotten what?” Her questing fingers sifted through the hair at the back of his head. “What it’s like to be loved.”

- "I was afraid." The moment the words escaped his lips, William wished he could steal them back.

- William cupped her face. He pressed his lips to each cheek, slowly, as if he were savoring the contact. “It’s been a long time since I felt fear.”

William says he came to Florence to find beauty and hope. My favorite part of this book is William telling Raven his backstory and his road to Florence. I loved Raven's bursting heart. I also was riveted during discussions of worldviews and crises of faith after a scene with Father Kavanaugh.

Raven Wood is so bold and rooted in strength. I love that Raven feels awkward and overwhelmed at times but her strength always rises like cream to the top. When William points out that he loves her character and her heart, my own heart gets full. She learns to receive from William (even when he doesn't always give in a way she can receive, like her birthday gift for example) She lets herself lean on him, too. (literally and figuratively) I can't wait to see how they grow even more in The Roman.

Yes, there were more dealings with the Emersons in this book! I enjoyed that aspect so much, like frosting on a cake. It all just fits in so well with the centerpiece of the stolen art and the happenings at the Uffizi. And we are left with mystery.

Sylvain Reynard has been the center of my book world journey since last year. His books speak to me greatly on many levels and they touch places that make me want to read slowly and absorb words and sentences as well as sit back and think. I am enjoying audio books for the first time. And I have already reread The Man in the Black Suit!

Leaving The Shadow with the aftermath of its conflicts only heightens my anticipation for The Roman! We are going to Rome! I am jumping in on both and audible! To quote William describing how he feels about Raven, this a book that deserves to be read over and over again.
This series is nothing like Ms. Reynards Gabriel's Inferno Trilogy (3 Book Series) even though Gabriel and Julia have a few cameo's in this series. So don't expect it to be (but for me it was just as good). This is a paranormal romance. In this second installment, Ms. Reynard conveys how vampire Prince William is beginning to show more and more humanity...a plus for his ever growing relationship with Raven, but detrimental to his strong and powerful ruling image. William is Vampire Prince of the Principality of Florence and to his vampire subjects who will turn on anyone appearing or displaying the slightest weakness. He faces the threat of war brewing among the underworld, traitors within his court, and a revolution among his Principality. He does all this while protecting his love and keeping her safe from those attempting to use her to manipulate and destroy him. Ms. Reynard expertly builds dramatic suspense and mystery while weaving it all around the growing romantic relationship between Raven and William and the many dangers that threaten them. Ms. Reynard takes us to the edge of doom before pulling us back again. And when the Prince is given the answer to keep war away from his borders...he finds it's a no win situation. For he must sacrifice and give up his hope...his beauty.
This was an expensive purchase for me but well worth every dime. Yes, this story ends with a cliffhanger. There's simply too much to tell for Ms. Reynard to put it all in one or even two installments. I highly recommended reading The Raven (Florentine series Book 1), of this series in order to thoroughly connect to the characters. If you enjoy Old World paranormal excitement mixed with a little bit of Greek Mythology and Renaissance art, you'll love this series.
